The present ducking stool is a replica built in the 20th century, it can be found in Ducking Stool Lane as described in that page of this web site. Local historians are still researching the original use of the stool which dunks those seated on it into the Mill Stream. Back in the 15th century we believe it was used to punish scolds and those who committed minor crimes of a civil nature and proved to be trouble makers to the community. This practise it is said continued until the 19th century when it fell out of use as did the pillory seen at the entrance to the Castle.

Perhaps we should reintroduce the stool throughout the Country to punish todays trouble makers, I suppose the EU would have something to say about the idea, they seem to control everything else we do these days.
