Grove Copse

A small oak woodland that provides an important oasis for local wildlife.

Site Description

Grove Copse is a 1.45 hectare nature reserve that is situated to the west of Christchurch Borough, within the St. Catherine's Ward. The area is comprised mainly of mature oak woodland habitat, with a rhododendron dominated under storey.

Historical Information

The site itself is part of the former grounds of Grove Farm. The farmhouse still exists as a private residence next to the site. This site has historically been referred to as 'Bluebell Wood' although there are only small patches of bluebells present today.

Environmental Information

Despite the small size, the site is an important oasis for local wildlife, particularly woodland birds. It does not contain any rare or endangered species and is managed with the aim of maintaining and improving it as a wildlife habitat. The rhododendron under storey is being gradually removed to make way for native species, some of which will be coppiced with the aim of increasing the diversity of woodland fauna and flora.
